Public Discussion of the Draft Law on Higher Education Held

A public discussion of the Draft Law on Higher Education was held on 21 January 2020 at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Banja Luka.

Rector of the University of Banja Luka Prof. Radoslav Gajanin, PhD, thanked the Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development, Higher Education and Information Society of the Republic of Srpska, for active cooperation as for all activities related to this law.

,,The University of Banja Luka has submitted appropriate proposals and suggestions for the improvement of the Draft Law on Higher Education in due time. Approximately 80 percent of our proposals are included in the Draft Law on Higher Education’’, Rector Gajanin said, indicating that some of the suggestions were not included in this draft.

He expressed hope that other suggestions would also be considered and included in the final version of the Law on Higher Education.

,,All our suggestions are aimed at improving the wording of the law, as well as improving higher education and the University in general“, Rector said.

Assistant Minister for Higher Education Radmila Pejic interpreted the Draft Law on behalf of the Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development, Higher Education and Information Society of the Republic of Srpska, and participants in the discussion from the academic community, the union and students made a number of constructive proposals in order to reach the best possible legal solution.

The Draft Law on Higher Education was adopted at the 8th regular session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska, held on 6 December 2019. At this session, the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska adopted the conclusion by which it decided to refer the Draft Law on Higher Education to the public discussion, as it regulates issues that are of particular importance for citizens and about which the interested authorities and organizationa, as well as scientific and professional instutitions, need to consult.

In addition to the public discussion held at the University of Banja Luka, the ministry responsible for organizing public discussions will organize them in the forthcoming days also in other cities and municipalities of the Republic of Srpska, in which organizational units of the Unviersity of Istocno Sarajevo are located.
