Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to present the basics of a multidisciplinary approach to the artificial establishment of forests and plantations. These activities are based on the knowledge of biological and ecological and gene-ecological characteristics of species with which forests are artificially established.
Learning outcomes
Through the course, students gain knowledge on defining the essential parameters of habitat conditions for the choice of species and knowledge of preparatory work, planting techniques and care measures and management in the first years after establishment.
Content
1. The importance of establishing forests and plantations; 2. Overview of activities in our country and in the world; 3. Selection of species for afforestation/reforestation; 4. Methods of site preparation; 5. Preparation of planting sites; 6. Properties of planting material (type, age, quality, transplant stress); 7. Density and method of planting; 8. Nurturing and maintaining newly established forests; 9. Measures of care and thinning in the function of the stability of established forests and plantations; 10. Basics of plantation forestry; 11. Selection of suitable habitats and clones for plantation establishment; 12. Planting material in plantation forestry; 13. Overview of the most important species in the establishment of forests and plantations. Practical part: 1. Basics for the preparation of elaborate for new forests establishment; 2. Introduction and objectives; 3. Defining habitat conditions; 4. Habitat preparation for afforestation; 5. Selection of species for afforestation; 5. Planting; 6. Works after the establishment of planted forests; 7. Calendar of works and calculation of costs; 8. Concluding remarks. Field classes are mandatory for one day.
