Presentation of the study opportunities at universities in the USA

University of Banja LukaGeneral

Within the activities marking The International Education Week, lasting from 17-21 November 2014, the representatives of the Embassy of the United States of America in Bosnia and Herzegovina paid a visit to the University of Banja Luka and presented the opportunities and challenges of studying at USA universities.

Over the course of several past years of excellent cooperation of the University and the Embassy, numerous presentations of study programmes and student exchange programmes available to our students have been organized. The University, aided by the Embassy, managed to host some distinguished American lecturers, fellows and students from various disciplines, with its own staff, in turn, using the benefits of the Government of the United States of America (USA) scholarships to pursue academic goals at USA universities.

During the presentation held at the Rectorate of the University on 18 November 2014, Mr. Edward Gallagher, Director of the Banja Luka Office of the USA Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, pointed out the fact that one of the key qualities of USA universities was the appreciation of diversity, meaning that foreign students are given advantage and conveniences provided they fulfill the enrolment requirements, especially those referring to English language skills. To support this claim, he said that there were around 800, 000 foreign students in the USA, out of whom 364 from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ms. Julie Gallagher, who used to teach English as a Second Language at several American universities, spoke about modalities of checking the knowledge of English. To all those interested in studying at some of USA universities, she recommended choosing the ones in smaller towns, which offer quality education at reduced living costs than those situated in big cities. Ms. Gallagher reminded the present of the fact that there were almost 4, 500 accredited higher education institutions in the USA.

Prior to the presentation, the distinguished guests from the USA Embassy were welcomed by Prof. Dr Valerija Šaula, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of the University of Banja Luka.
