Vice-Rector for International and Interuniversity Cooperation, Office of the Vice-Rector for International and Interuniversity Cooperation and a network of coordinators for international cooperation on faculties and the Academy of Arts are all in charge for the implementation of the activities and coordination of international cooperation. The goal of this network is to, in the best possible way, make the most of the existing capacities and activities in this field (collecting and distributing information, exchange of ideas and experiences, suggestions, activities and participation).
The existing laws in the field of higher education give the higher education institutions (universities) autonomy in establishing cooperation with higher education institutions from other countries. Thereby, the international contractual capacity of University of Banja Luka is recognized, which is of great importance to its status both in its state and abroad. The process of higher education transformation and integration in European Higher Education Area, as well as in the unique European Research Area, impose the necessity for cooperation with other universities abroad, in order to create conditions for staff and student exchange, mutual recognition of periods and levels of education, and increase in work quality. That is why, in the previous period, particular attention was paid to the contractual relationships with other higher education institutions.
Since the integration of the University in 2008, more than 200 contracts with faculties, universities, institutes and other higher education institutions have been concluded.
Apart from cooperation agreements, membership in international associations is one of the important references on the willingness to cooperate with foreign partners, while it also contributes to the reputation and recognition of the University at an international level. University of Banja Luka is a member of European University Association (EUA) and signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum.
The University is a member of International University Network of Academic and Research Cooperation, under the patronage of Science Park of the La Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, a member of the General Assembly of Interuniversity Centre for Research and Cooperation with Eastern and South-Eastern Europe (CIRCEOS), with headquarters at University of Bari, Italy, as well as a member of UniAdrion "Network of Universities" established with the purpose to create a permanent connection among Universities and Research centres from the Adriatic-Ionian Region.
Within the framework of international cooperation, University of Banja Luka gives significant attention to student and staff exchange, as one part of the activities from cooperation agreements, through international exchange programmes, study visits, summer schools, workshops and practice. Since academic year 2008/09, the University became a part of the so-called CEEPUS (Central uropean Exchange Programme for University Studies) Network, and since academic year 2011/12, it participates in an exchange programme called ERASMUS MUNDUS. Since 2011, due to the obligation of recognition of periods of study abroad, a network of academic coordinators for international exchange in faculties and Academy of Arts was formed.
Staff and students of University of Banja Luka also use other scholarship opportunity programmes provided by governments of foreign countries and international organizations and foundations. Visits of the foreign students and eminent lecturers in different fields to the University are a practice that is cherished.
HUAWEI Technologies Ltd., Banja Luka, gives each year the NOVUM awards, scholarships for five excellent students of University of Banja Luka. These awards have been given since academic year 2010/11, when HUAWEI Technologies Ltd. committed to give the awards in the next eight academic years.
Participation in international projects and other joint activities with foreign partners is extremely important in the field of international cooperation, so University of Banja Luka pays great attention to establishing new contacts. The largest number of international educational projects implemented at the University are the TEMPUS projects. Since 1996, University of Banja Luka took part in 89 TEMPUS projects, funded by the European Commission. In that context, cooperation was established with all universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as numerous universities from Europe. Since 2014, the University is participating in a new program of the European Commission called Erasmus+.
In the upcoming period as well, the cooperation with the international organizations active in Bosnia and Herzegovina under the cooperation programmes implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue and intensify, especially with the following: European Commission, Council of Europe, Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Erasmus+ (previously, Tempus) Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UN Resident Coordinator Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), UNDP in Bosnia and Herzegovina (United Nations Development Programme), OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), EU Info Centre, embassies of Bosnia and Herzegovina abroad and foreign embassies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and EUA(European University Association).
